ATAC – A History of Measuring Viscosity
An earlier REL C&P Viscometer
ATAC is the latest brand associated with some of the greatest names in measuring viscosity. Although the names may have changed over the years, the products have maintained the same rigour for quality and precision engineering.
Hallikainen process viscometers were first developed 70 years ago for the growing oil and gas business. Such was their dominance, Hallikainen became the trade name that was interchangeably used for a capillary viscometer in oil field service. In simple terms, a process viscometer was a ‘Hallikainen’. The company changed hands over the next few decades, and was owned by some very notable names, such as GEC Elliot (UK), Fisher Controls, Fluid Data, Rotork Analysis, Sysco Analytics, and finally, ATAC.
REL was born out of ICI, who had developed the Cone & Plate Viscometer. For many years, REL was a by-word for this type of laboratory viscometer. In 2013, ATAC acquired REL and upgraded the design of this market-leading viscometer. The current Nµ-line range was developed from the REL viscometer, bringing this famous brand’s technology into the 21st century.
Rotork Analysis acquired Hone in the 1990s, which in turn was acquired by ATAC. Hone was already famous for their physical property analysers. So much so that, like Hallikainen and REL, Hone became the trade name associated with many types of PPA.
