Oil & Gas Refining Capacity – Why our analysers are in demand

Oil & Gas refining – The ongoing fragility in the oil and gas supply chain, due to the war in the Middle-east, is providing an impetus towards increasing oil & gas refining and storage capabilities across the globe.

The Big Issue – Oil & Gas Refining

The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has underscored the vulnerability of global energy supply chains, prompting many countries to reconsider their dependence on external oil refining. As one of the world’s most critical chokepoints, the Strait handles a significant share of global oil shipments. Disruptions—whether from geopolitical tensions, military incidents, or blockades—can quickly restrict the flow of crude oil and refined products, leading to price volatility and supply shortages.

Traditionally, many countries have relied on importing refined petroleum products rather than investing in domestic refining capacity. However, the instability in Hormuz has exposed the risks of this model. When transit routes become unreliable, nations without sufficient refining infrastructure face delays, higher costs, and potential energy insecurity.

Oil & Gas Refining – The Response

In response, governments are increasingly prioritising domestic refining capabilities to ensure greater control over supply chains. By processing crude oil locally, countries can reduce reliance on vulnerable shipping routes and respond more effectively to global disruptions. This shift also enhances strategic reserves and provides economic benefits through job creation and industrial development.

Ultimately, the Hormuz crisis has reinforced a key lesson: energy security is not just about access to crude oil, but also about the ability to refine and distribute it independently.

Our Physical Property Analysers are in demand

ATAC manufactures physical property analysers that are used in the refining and storage processes. In particular, we have seen a recent uptick in interest for our Vapour Pressure Analysers – which measure Reid Vapour Pressure (RVP) and True Vapour Pressure (TVP) – as well as our process viscometers.

Additionally, our Colour Monitors and our Opacity Monitors have received increased attention.

We are also seeing interest from parts of the globe that are not usually associated with oil and gas production, so we can only assume that the geo-political situation has provided this new interest in critically important equipment used in increasing refining capabilities.
