R and D Viscometer – Why R&D?

Why R and D Viscometer? As a marketer, I am always interested in the profile of the customer. What do they do? How did they come to hear of us? How are they going to use the viscometer?

I have to admit that I am pleasantly surprised by some of the answers we receive to those questions. And one that comes up time and again, is that the customer intends to use the viscometer in their R&D. That’s why I sometimes refer to it internally as our R&D viscometer.

To be fair, there are a broad range of applications in which the viscometer can be used. For instance, they can be used in quality control, as part of the manufacturing process. And that’s where I envisaged that the vast majority of our viscometers would find their purpose. But it seems that very many are used in R&D.

R and D Viscometer – Why it has become an R&D favourite.

The ATAC NuLine Viscometer has a tradition of being used in R&D. Our current model is the latest in the line of viscometers that can be traced back to the very first cone and plate viscometer. And when I write ‘traced back’, I literally mean within our own company’s history. The ICI Viscometer was part of our company’s heritage. After various mergers and acquisitions, it became the REL Viscometer and REL was later acquired by ATAC.

When other companys describe their cone and plate viscometer as an ICI Viscometer, they have less right to do so than ATAC. The original was developed by ICI to measure the viscosity of their new paints – as part of their ongoing R&D programme. Today, the latest generation of the ATAC cone and plate viscometer is regularly used for the same purpose.

It has features that can be traced to the original machine, though today, it benefits from developments such as the colour screen and digital output to a PC. The cone and plate parts themselves are manufactured from tungsten carbide, which ensures that they have a longer working life than those of our competitors. For these reasons, and many more, it is considered a favourite with those engaged in R&D.
