Sustainable Viscosity – What makes any device sustainable?

The Oil & Gas industry is not usually associated with sustainability. However, the fact remains – especially in the UK – that oil and gas are not going away any time soon. We will be reliant on these fossil fuels for many years to come. So, how can those who service that industry make a contribution to sustainability?

A device can be considered sustainable if it consumes as little energy as it needs to. Additionally, it can be considered sustainable if it is built to last. After all, being around for a long time means that it does not need to be replaced very often, and that means that the energy consumed to construct the machine does not need repeating very often. And finally, the device can contribute to resource sustainability if it can be broken down and recycled at the end of its working life.

So, how do we fare at ATAC?

The design of our machines is key to their sustainability. Our process Viscometers, our Vapour Pressure Analyser and our Colour and Opacity Monitors were designed many years ago by Hallikainen, and have been continually updated over the years. Our legacy analysers – the Cloud Point Analyser, Boiling Point Analyser, Flash Point Analyser, and Distillation Analyser were originally designed by Hone. Both of these brands were famous in the industry for designing quality devices. They use as little energy as they need to and nothing more. Continual improvements have ensured that newer models use less energy than their predecessors.

And the fact that I am mentioning Hallikainen and Hone is a bit of a clue to their longevity. Many of these machines have been operating continuously for over four decades. They were designed to last, operating as they do in some of the harshest environments. And the fact that there are very few moving parts in these analysers ensures that they are light on spare parts, further enhancing their sustainability credentials.

Finally, nearly every component in the analysers can be recycled. That’s what I mean by sustainable viscosity. Physical Property Analysis, when done properly, can be considered to be truly sustainable.
