Accurate Viscometry

Accurate Viscometry – Why does it matter?

So, what do I mean by accurate viscometry and why does it matter? The science of measuring viscosity – accurately – has led to the development of some pretty neat technology. For those that are involved in the manufacture of a wide range of liquids and semi-solids, the requirement to achieve a consistent viscosity is often critical.

Accurate viscometry is required for a whole host of reasons. Firstly, it may be important to ensure the correct functionality of the product being manufactured. We can all think of liquids that require a particular consistency to be properly functional, whether it be foodstuffs, cosmetics, or petrochemicals.

Additionally, whilst functionality may be important, consumer expectations may also play a part. Imagine a product – let’s choose a facial cream. Not only is the right viscosity going to ensure proper absorption by the skin, but the uniform and repeatable nature of that viscosity is going to be important to consumer confidence. Accurate viscometry cannot be left to chance.

Accurate Viscometry – Different technology for different products

The technology is not just about the products, but it also has to address the different processes used in the manufacturing process. For that reason, manufacturers like ATAC have developed high-tech viscometers that are appropriate for a variety of processes. For products like facial cream, we might expect accurate viscometry to be determined in a laboratory setting.

ATAC has developed a market-leading benchtop viscometer for use in laboratory situations. The NuLine Cone & Plate Viscometer was originally developed by ICI for its paint division, but has been improved and updated over the years. There will be laboratories across the world that will have original ICI or REL viscometers still in use. The latest generation of cone & plate viscometers is destined to be a standard piece of equipment wherever accurate viscometry is required.

Likewise, the same can be said of large-scale chemical production, such as the production of petroleum products, bitumen and fuels. For these, the processes of production require accurate in-line measurement of viscosity. These much larger machines can be found in production and refining facilities all over the world. ATAC has developed two versions of their process viscometers – a narrow bore capillary and a wide bore capillary. For those familiar with these viscometers, the name Hallikainen might ring a bell, as the ATAC viscometers were developed and improved from the original Hallikainen range.
