ICI Viscometer

ICI Viscometer – The real ICI Viscometer

ICI Viscometer – Developed by ICI Paints

Many companies will describe their viscometers as being based upon the original ICI Viscometer. Some even claim that this type of laboratory viscometer is universally known as an ‘ICI viscometer’, or an ‘ICI-type viscometer’. Don’t be fooled. There is only one manufacturer that can truly claim to manufacture their viscometer under that name. That company is ATAC.

The original analogue ICI Viscometer was developed by ICI Paints many years ago. It was a revolutionary concept, using the cone and plate method of measuring viscosity. It was not only a disruptive technology in its day, but it was accurate, reliable and, very importantly, portable. It could sit alongside the production process and measure the viscosity of fluids as they were being manufactured. It is hardly surprising that all other cone and plate viscometer manufacturers emulated the ICI Viscometer – including leaning in on its name.

ICI Viscometer – How it developed over time

ICI Paints sold the manufacturing rights to a successor company – REL. It didn’t take long for this model to become known simply as a ‘REL viscometer’. After all, it was essentially the same machine, with a striking blue finish. It continued to dominate the market for many years. In time, a digital version of the viscometer was released (which is pictured far right above).

The NuLine Viscometer is the ICI Viscometer – no other viscometer manufacturer can make that claim.

Mark Turpin – ATAC Director

Once again, REL was acquired by ATAC, who upgraded and improved the viscometer, and launched it under its current name, the ATAC NuLine Viscometer.

And ATAC are not resting on their laurels. Already a improved version is in development, ensuring that the company remains at the cutting edge of this technology. First with ICI, then REL, and now ATAC, the cone and plate viscometer is a British success story that is heralded around the globe.
