Hallikainen 491 – Why is it associated with ATAC?
Simply put, the Hallikainen 491 is the ATAC model 491. The famous old brand has been through a few changes of ownership over the years. The feature image (top) shows three versions of the logo, covering a time span of 70 years. The original font was typical of mid-last century, before it was redesigned in a slightly less conventional font. The most recent logo enjoys borrowing elements from each of its predecessors.
Hallikainen was once very well known as a trusted brand, manufacturing a range of physical property analysers, as well as a number of medical devices. Included in their medical range was the first ever heart-lung bypass machine – in its day, a truly revolutionary piece of medical kit. Today, Hallikainen is part of the ATAC group of brand names, which also includes famous brands such as Hone. But crucially, from the point of view of ATAC, a Hallikainen was simply a by-word for a physical property analyser.

Hallikainen 491 – What does it do?
The Hallikainen 491 is a high viscosity process viscometer. It accurately measures the dynamic viscosity of a wide range of products, including petroleum, lube oils, and bitumen – to name just a few. As you can imagine, this in-line wide bore viscometer is ATEX certified, suitable for the environment and the products that it is processing. (A multi-capillary version of the 491 – the model 421 viscometer – is also available).
Over the years, ATAC has developed and improved upon the original American design. The updated British-engineered machines are sold all around the world. These days, most purchasers will ask for the ATAC 491. However, it is always a pleasure when we are asked for a Hallikainen 491. It acknowledges the fine heritage that these machines enjoy, and ensures that this fine old brand is not forgotten.
