Viscosity Quality Control

Viscosity Quality Control

Ensuring that cosmetic creams and other body products have a consistent viscosity is part of the Quality Control Process.

Viscosity Quality Control

Viscosity Quality Control – Why is it important?

Viscosity Quality Control – ensuring a consistent viscosity from batch to batch – is an essential part of the cosmetics production process. Consumers have an expectation that the facial cream or moisturiser that they apply every morning will have that same familar feeling, day in and day out.

Inconsistencies will be interpreted by consumers as a sign that the product is below par. In fact, it will put a question mark over the brand and all other products within the manufacturer’s range. This is particularly important because of two key issues – the fact that the products are applied to important and sensitive areas like the face and skin, and, because the product is cost-dense – the product is usually very expensive for such a small quantity of product.

Research also shows that consumers often stick to the same products for many years. The lifetime cost of changing brands is very high indeed.

Viscosity Quality Control – How is it achieved?

There are, of course, a number of methods available to cosmetics manufacturers to measure the viscosity of their product. This includes a range of suitable viscometers for such measurements, but rotational viscometers of one variety or another are typically used. Sometimes, vane spindles are considered appropriate. Alternatively, a cone & plate viscometer can be the ideal solution.

Viscosity Quality Control using a cone & plate viscometer – like the NuLine Cone & Plate Viscometer pictured above – can utilise its superior functionality over a vane spindle. Perhaps the most important is the ability to measure the viscosity at a consistent temperature. The NuLine Cone & Plate Viscometer can be set to a preferred temperature that is accurate to just one tenth of a degree Celcius.

If consistency is key, then nothing beats that level of control and functionality.
