Pre-preg Resin Viscosity – Background

This white paper was prepared by our Technical Director, Dr. Mark Turpin. It was designed to meet the needs of those customers who have an active interest in measuring the viscosity of resin. Pre-preg – short for preimpregnated – is used to form composite materials in conjunction with a range of resins. This is particularly useful in a number of industrial applications, including aviation, motorsport, space travel, sailing and prosthetics – to name but a few.

Those involved in the use of pre-preg resins will be aware of the dichotomy that exists in the production process. Resins require certain flow characteristics to allow for proper coating of the fibres, whislt simulataneously preferring that the curing process should occur rapidly. To address this, QA testing of the pre-preg resin viscosity – at a temperature close to the pressing temperature – is desirable.

Pre-preg Resin Viscosity – Technical Insights

The white paper goes on to address what manufacturers can do, and how pre-preg resin viscosity measurement can be made more reliable. It answers the question ‘what are we trying to find out?’, as well as identifying the parameters that are of interest, and the procedures for viscosity measurement.

The procedure involves the use of the ATAC REL230 high temparature benchtop viscometer, equipped with a 40P cone. The preferred methodology allowed for the measurement of seven samples and the results are lain out in graphical form above. The white paper provides a full commentary on the results, and includes further graphical presentation of results, including plotting viscosity against time.
