Viscometer Precision – What should we claim for our Viscometer?

When we produce our claims for our viscometer, how precise can we truly claim to be? In this article, we introduce a white paper authored by Dr Mark Turpin, which shows that in the right laboratory conditions, we can claim much more precision than we currently do.

Viscometer Precision – Objective of the White Paper

In simple terms, Dr Mark Turpin, the Technical Director of ATAC, decided to evaluate the precision (and its reproducibility) of the Nµline Cone & Plate viscometer under strict laboratory conditions. Obviously, we are aware that many of the viscometer’s operators may not be working in ideal conditions – nor may they need to. Our marketing claims about the viscometer recognises that fact. But how precise can we claim the viscometer to be when the conditions are just right?

That was the objective. Dr Mark outlines the methodology used in the laboratory. He made 10 measurements for the same oil sample, to provide a suitable statistical basis for his analysis.

Viscometer Precision – The Results

Dr Mark sets out the results in the white paper along with the statistical analysis he undertook.

Further to that, he explains the significance of his findings and how this might impact upon the claims that can be made. He suggests that the presentation of results by some manufacturers can do a disservice to the customer. Importantly, he explains how his results impact upon both the repeatability and the viscometer precision.

What do we learn about the viscometer?

In this investigation, Dr Mark suggests that the results on viscometer precision were better than our marketing claims. He concludes that our data sheets should be able to claim that the viscometer precision and repeatability are ‘better than 1%‘. Of course, this test was conducted under strict laboratory conditions.

White papers such as this are part of the DNA of ATAC. We are rightly seen as thought leaders in the world of viscometry. It is very much in keeping with the heritage of our brands, and the expertise that has helped develop the modern product offering in physical property analysis.
